THE LORD SHALL FIGHT FOR YOU

The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.
Exodus 14:14
Those who have believed in the True and Living God have always had enemies, and so shall it always be. These are enemies who stand opposed to all that God is, and all those who are associated with Him. They will oppose in any way they can, oppress if they can, and destroy when they can. Our text today gives us a graphic instance of one such occasion. The Egyptians had begun by opposing the Israelites, proceeded to oppress them mightily, and had now come to destroy them at the Red Sea. The Israelites, after 430 years of bondage, had no means of defending themselves. They were servants, not warriors. These were their well-armed former masters, skilled in the art of cruel warfare. Moses speaks the words of our text as an assurance to these terrified folk. He himself is awaiting some definite direction from the Lord. In the Mercy of God, He provides that direction in the next verse, ‘And the Lord said to Moses, Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward.’ This provided a clear path for Israel’s escape. Then Christ Himself stepped between Israel and the Egyptians, ‘And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved, and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. So, it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus, it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.’ The final act of God in His fighting for Israel came after all of Israel was safely through the sea. ‘Then the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen. And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So, the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained.’ Here is Christ, fighting for His people in a graphic way. May we see Him do the same for us today and praise Him for it. Christ is ever the Great Defender of His people. If He has done it for others, we may have good hope that He will do it for us.
We rest on Thee our Shield and our Defender.
We rejoice that You stand between Your people
and those who would destroy them.
We praise You, that You will get the victory
and that Your people will be secure.
