THE LORD BE MAGNIFIED

Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let such as love Your salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified!
Psalm 40:16
Our chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. Paul goes so far as to say, ‘Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.’ Thus, the life we live has purpose and meaning. David was united with Paul in this basic purpose. He articulates it in our text. It is, ‘those who seek You,’ and ‘such as love your salvation,’ who intentionally seek to see Jehovah magnified. How do they do it? They do it by making much of Christ. In Psalm 138, David remarks, ‘For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.’ While this is certainly true regarding the written word of God, it is preeminently true of Christ, Who is the Living Word of God. The first chapter of Hebrews makes this argument. The writer speaks of the way in which God communicated to us in the past, ‘in various ways’ and contrasts that with the fact that He, ‘has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.’ He goes on to elaborate upon the preeminence of Christ. Thus when David says that God’s people should desire Jehovah to be magnified, he is arguing that Christ should be magnified. It is entirely appropriate for us to take up David’s cause. We desire Jehovah to be magnified and therefore make much of Christ. This brings us to faith in Him, the contemplation of Him, and the imitation of Him. This is the practical result of our desire to see the LORD magnified.
Great God of Wonders,
You are utterly worthy of all our praise.
We rejoice that You have brought us to Christ
and He has captivated us.
