I WOULD HAVE LOST HEART

Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence. I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Psalm 27:12-13
David had enemies. It was not that they just did not like him. It was that they hated him enough to lie about him and attempt to kill him. This is far more serious than a coworker who does not like you. These people were armed and aggressive. This was tremendously discouraging, especially in the days when David’s chief adversary was King Saul, his father-in-law. David would have lost heart had he not believed he would see the goodness of God in the land of the living. He had faith that God would do him good while he was still alive. He had no doubts about his eternal future, but he also had confidence in Christ, his Shepherd while he was still in this scene of time. Therefore he could walk through the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil. Christ had His rod to defend him and His staff to pull him out of danger. Therefore David did not faint. He did not lose heart. We have enemies as well. They may not be exactly of the same stripe and variety as David’s were, but they hate us just as thoroughly. We would have reason to lose heart if we did not have Christ our Shepherd. He is as thoroughly our shield and Defender as He was David’s. We believe Him and in Him. We look to Him to lead us and to preserve us from those who lie about us and threaten us. Christ is as alive today as He ever was. He takes great interest in the plight of His people. He will do us good.
O God, our Shield and our Defender,
we rejoice that You guard Your people.
We praise You that You will encourage us
that we not lose heart.
