CHRIST OUR SANCTIFICATION

But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.
1 Corinthians 1:30
Salvation is all of grace and all of God. This includes our sanctification. The Westminster Shorter Catechism defines sanctification as, ‘the work of God’s free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin and live unto righteousness.’ This is a clear articulation of how God works in us to conform us to His Image. Every inclination we have toward following Christ is the result of this work of God’s free grace. Do we desire to worship? God has given us that desire. Do we pray? God moves us to prayer. Do we love God? He has drawn our hearts out after Him. Thus, Christ is made to us sanctification. The answer to the Catechism question could as well read, ‘after the image of Christ.’ The Scripture supports this in such passages as, ‘Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.’ The end of sanctification is Christ-likeness. Christ is what wholly sanctified humanity looks like. Therefore, when God makes Christ sanctification to us, He changes us into those who resemble Him. This process goes on throughout the whole of our life. Sometimes the advancements seem to be slow and small. Even at a great age, we may feel that we have very far to go. Having said that, we have confidence that having begun a good work in us, God will perform it unto the Day of Jesus Christ. He will complete this sanctifying work in us.
Our Great and Gracious God,
we rejoice at Your works of grace.
We praise You that You will complete
all that You have begun.
